Rising to the challenge of sustainability

Sustainability and ethical business models are challenging but vital issues for any business to address but when your product itself is an integral part of the environment, then it’s a challenge you need to address openly and devote time and resources to overcome.

The people who use our kiln dried logs, our charcoal and our pizza oven logs need the reassurance and peace of mind that the environmental impact of our service and their own activities are offset and minimised as much as they can possibly be.

The companies we supply need those same reassurances, for the sustainability of their own businesses, their brands and their image.

As a family run business we share these concerns, they are the reasons why we are leading the UK industry in embracing and investing in innovation and some different ways of doing things.

Removing plastic

Historically, the use of plastic has been widespread in the sale of logs and timber products; shrink wrap is a great example, widely used on pallets to keep logs secure and dry.

LogsOnline has now developed our own unique branded cardboard lids to fulfil exactly the same purpose with a solution that is both biodegradable and sustainable.

For smaller volume shipments, the use of plastic is widespread. We have taken the decision to use Jute bags for this purpose. Jute bags, also known as potato bags have a very low water and CO2 footprint, they are strong, durable and essentially; compostable, reusable and recyclable.

One Tree Planted

Trees are the lifeblood of our company and the wider world we live in; they do much more than provide us and our customers with the best quality logs.

They clean the air we breathe, filter the water we need for life and provide a vital home for 80% of the world’s land-based life, they’re also an essential component in many medicines and crucial carbon filters.

Trees provide us and 1.6 billion other people on the planet with jobs, if we are using them; it makes sense to replace them.

That is why we have partnered with the environmental charity OneTreePlanted.org which plant and tend one tree on our behalf for every product sold. Their focus is reforestation on a global level. Year on year since 2014 they have doubled the number of trees they have planted and partner with some of the world’s biggest brands such as DHL, Adidas, Facebook and Ford motors to name just a few.

Looking to the future

Sustainability should be more than just a marketing buzzword and it shouldn’t be something a business looks at once, before declaring the problem sorted.

Logsonline is still a relatively new company; with that comes new ideas. Sustainability has been a part of our philosophy from day one. We have looked closely at the environmental impact of our industry and it will continue to inform the services we provide for as long as we provide them.
