Planning Ahead for Your Kiln Dried Firewood Needs

With spring now well under way and the summer months firmly in sight many firewood merchants and retailers might be forgiven for putting thoughts of winter on the back burner for a while.

The changing face of retail and all-round uncertainty regarding lockdown restrictions have also played a part in many retailer’s delays putting firm plans in place, after all there has been a lot to handle in very challenging times.

But certainly where kiln dried logs are concerned, failing to plan for the next heating season might just be planning to fail, for a number of very good and, as far as autumn and winter 2021 are concerned; very unique reasons.

The DEFRA factor

There has been a notable change in the wood fuel sector this year, undoubtedly it is a change for the better, but it’s also one that might catch many seasonal retailers out should they fail to prepare in advance.

In May of 2021, DEFRA began its plan to phase out wet woods and certain types of domestic coal in favour of cleaner, drier and safer alternatives, these fuels will carry a new mark of certification on packaging, shelving or elsewhere in-store, it is called the ‘Ready to Burn’ logo.

Any wood sold in volumes of less than 2m³ must by law carry this mark to confirm it has a moisture content of 20% or less. In simple terms that means sourcing from a trusted and reputable supplier who meets the new standards, is a new pre-requisite to buying.

Something that any firewood merchant or retailer doesn’t want to leave until those busy, colder months to sort out, because by then it may already be too late...

Whatever the colder months bring, people will always need wood

One of the reasons for the new is DEFRA certification the recent surge in popularity of log burning stoves in the home. That trend is set to continue and possibly even grow in the future as more people enjoy the benefits of cleaner kiln dried log burning, with firewood that is easier to ignite, less damaging to health and the environment and burns more efficiently for longer.

Whatever else the fuel burning months bring, one thing is for certain:

The need for reliable, high quality kiln dried firewood logs that meet and exceed DEFRA’s new Ready to Burn standards.
